My Evolution and Emotions in teaching writing now!

As a teacher of writing, I have embarked on a transformative journey that has not only honed my skills but also deepened my understanding of aspects of writing. Throughout my experience, I have encountered numerous challenges, revelations and moments of inspiration that have shaped my teaching philiosphy. In this blog post, I will be reflecting on my journey as a teacher of writing, I have to say, the switch from being a preschool teacher to a primary school teacher has been a total game changer. Before, when I was a preschool teacher, I used to be clueless about so many aspects of teaching writing, but now I feel like I’ve leveled up and can be a better teacher in the primary school setting.

Before, I did not really grasp the writing process and was not aware about the 6 plus one trait. But now, I've fully embraced the writing process and the 6 plus one traits have become my guiding principles. One thing I've realized is that the writing process isn't just a straight path, but more like a dynamic and iterative journey. Understanding this process has been key in teaching my future students how to brainstorm, plan, draft, revise, edit, and publish their work. It will be so fulfilling to see their growth and progress at each stage. I will love seeing their ideas come to life on paper and watching their confidence as writers soar.

Let's not forget the importance of ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, conventions, and presentation. I had no idea what those were, but they've completely transformed my approach to teaching writing. By focusing on these aspects, I can help my students develop well-rounded and polished pieces of writing. Not only does it improve their writing skills, but it also fosters their critical thinking and self-reflection abilities. It's truly rewarding!

Creating a positive and nurturing classroom environment is crucial in fostering a love for writing. I strive to create a safe space where my students feel comfortable expressing themselves and taking risks with their writing. By promoting a climate of respect, collaboration, and open-mindedness, I will encourage my students to explore their creativity and develop their unique writing voice. By doing this will not only enhances their writing skills but also cultivates essential life skills such as effective communication, empathy and teamwork.

But it does not stop there! In the primary school world, I have the opportunity to introduce my students to a whole range of writing genres, such as narrative, persuasive, descriptive, and expository, allowing them to explore their interests and discover their strengths. I have gained more knowledge on activities that I can use with my students to make these topics more engaging and interesting. Being aware of the different types of assessment tools I am so eager to try them in my classroom.

Teaching poetry pre-school introduces young minds to language and self expression through simple rhymes and rhythms. In primary school, it gets more exciting with the different types of poems and students can explore through the different types of literary devices. As they can be encouraged to analyze and interpret poems, developing their critical thinking skills. Teaching poetry in primary school provides students with a creative outlet to express their thoughts and feelings.

Overall, being a teacher of writing is a deeply fulfilling and rewarding experience. I am grateful for the knowledge and skills I have acquired, as they enable me to guide and inspire my students on their writing journey. Witnessing their growth, creativity, and confidence as writers  will brings me immense joy and reaffirms my passion for teaching.
