My thoughts and information about the writing process and the 6 plus 1 traits connection

I am now empowered with more information about the writing process thanks to the prior lesson. It is the process of examining the thoughts and actions writers make when writing. Early writers' processes were broken down into three stages conception, incubation and production. The writing process consists of several stages: prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. Each stage plays a crucial role in developing a well-crafted piece of writing. My thoughts about this, writer is able to focus on specific aspects of their work at each stage, leading to more thorough and refined final products. Each step is essential to creating well-crafted written work because it gives writer the chance to come up with ideas, organize them into a draft, improve the work's structure and clarity, proofread compositions for errors, and create it to the audience it is intended for.

I have never come across the 6 plus 1 traits but as I had to research for class and had a class discussion, I realize that they have a connection to the writing process. The writing process collaborates with the 6 plus 1 writing traits (Ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, convention and presentation) as they are both essential components of effective writing to create engaging writing pieces. Prewriting encourages brainstorming and generating creative thoughts to form a solid foundation for writing.

The prewriting involves brainstorming ideas, conducting research, and organizing thoughts before putting pen to paper. I have learnt that this stage is closely related to the trait of ideas, as it focuses on generating and organizing content that is relevant and engaging for the reader. Once the prewriting stage is complete, writers move on to drafting their work. This is where they put their ideas into sentences and paragraphs, creating a rough version of their final piece. During class discussion I established that drafting aligns with the trait of organization, as writers need to structure their writing in a logical and coherent manner. A well-organized piece ensures that readers can follow the flow of ideas.

After drafting, writers enter the revising stage. This is where they review their work critically, making changes to improve clarity, coherence, and effectiveness. I understand that the revising stage connects strongly with the traits of voice and word choice.

Following revision comes the editing stage. Here, writers focus on correcting errors in grammar, punctuation, spelling, and sentence structure. The editing stage aligns with the traits of conventions and sentence fluency. I agree writers need to adhere to the rules of grammar and punctuation to ensure their writing is clear and professional.

Finally, the publishing stage involves preparing the final version of the writing for an audience. This stage encompasses the trait of presentation, as writers consider the layout, formatting, and overall visual appeal of their work.

I have learnt that the steps are also recursive as writer may need to make changes to their writing. The writing process and the 6 plus 1 traits of writing are interconnected. Each stage of the writing process contributes to the development and refinement of these traits, resulting in well-crafted and impactful written works.

  6. Hi Leshana, while reading your post I found it easy to comprehend. i truly liked that you matched the Writing process with the writing traits. linking where the traits are commonly found, for example, in the revising stage there would be the use of the sentence fluency and convent traits. As a take away I grasp that the the writing traits allow students to engage with their writing and share with the writer a piece of who they are.
