Exploring my descriptive writing workshop

Image
I will reflect on my class presentation for my descriptive writing workshop and I hope the information will be helpful as I share. Descriptive writing is a type of writing that aims to describe a topic or a scene in vivid detail, engaging the reader's senses and imagination. From the knowledge gained it is a form of creative writing that aims to paint a picture with words, allowing the reader to imagine the subject, place, or event as if they were experiencing it firsthand. As a teacher of writing, I have gained more knowledge about descriptive writing and activities that can be planned to make the lesson more effective and engaging. We explore several key elements of descriptive writing that can help you create a vivid and engaging description.  From what i understand d escriptive writing relies heavily on sensory details to create a vivid image in the reader's mind. This includes using sensory language to describe what the reader can see, hear, smell, taste, and feel. ...

Exploring My Expository Writing Workshop

Image
📙   This week's session, where we studied expository writing in great  detail,  was  enlightening.  Collaborating with fellow writing educators to provide a  talk on this  subject has expanded my understanding of the genre overall.  Expository writing is an  essential talent that calls on students to rely on facts,  research, and a well-structured  essay. As a writing instructor, I have gained great  insight into how to help my  students effectively navigate the complexity of this  writing style. Expository writing may be used to enlighten, clarify, teach, and provide  analysis,  among other things. As I dug further, I learned to value the many  variations found  in this genre, such as process and sequence, prolonged definition,  classification, cause and effect, problem and solution, comparison and contrast,  and description. With this knowledge in hand, I can't wait to introduce engagi...

The Seven Traits of Writing

Image
We assessed a piece of writing utilizing the 6+1 characteristics of writing in this week's session. The best part of the activity was the opportunity to directly apply the characteristics. Nevertheless, allow me to present an overview of the six-plus one traits of writing. The seven traits of writing include voice, ideas, presentation, conventions, organization, word choice and sentence fluency.  Trait  Definition  Ideas  the meaning and development of the message  Presentation  the overall appearance of the work  Voice  the tone of the piece- the personal stamp that the writer brings to it  Word Choice  the specific vocabulary the writer uses to convey meaning  Sentence Fluency  the way the words and phrases flow throughout the text  Conventions ...

The 6+1 Writing traits-

Image
Last LIT session focused on the 6+1 writing traits. We learned how each step was used to critique a piece of writing and how to positively give feedback that guided the students future writing. The six plus one trait is a way of teaching, modeling, and assessing the instruction of writing.  The Six Traits of writing are Ideas, Organization, Word Choice, Voice, Conventions, Sentence Fluency and Presentation. The writing traits creates a common vocabulary for students and guidelines for teachers to use with students so that they become familiar with the terms used in writing. Thus, developing a consistency of effective writing within our students from grade level to grade level.     The six traits model allows teachers and students to focus on one or two elements of writing at a time creating a more manageable and effective way for students to learn how to write. It also is a means of providing specific feedback to students through the assessment of their writin...

The 6 plus 1 traits of writing

Image
I will reflect on the the 6 plus 1 traits of writing as I learned so much about during my  class. As  we were engaged in a group activity to identify the 6 plus 1 traits within the piece, I fully understood the way in which the traits are used in writing.  As discussed, the 6 plus 1 traits of writing refer to a widely recognized framework for assessing and improving writing skills. To my understanding the traits provide a comprehensive approach to evaluating and enhancing various aspects of writing. Each trait focuses on a specific element of writing, allowing teachers and students to identify strengths and areas for improvement. I understand the importance of compelling ideas to create valuable content for readers.  Ideas are the foundation of any piece of writing. They represent the main message or purpose that the writer intends to convey. Strong ideas engage readers and make the writing more meaningful.  I understand by organizing informatio...

THE WRITING PROCESS AS LINKED TO THE 6+1 WRITING TRAITS

Image
During LIT class dated 11/10/23 we explored and discussed the steps to the writing process along with the 6+1 traits of writing. Its is evident that the writing process has developed over the years from what Britton (1970b) labeled them as conception, incubation and production. To what they are now a more complexed problem-solving process which entails Prewriting, Drafting, Revising, Editing and Publishing. I am of the view that the writing process as a structure of non linear steps, is equipped to help writers convey their thought through print. The writing process shows an interrelated relationship with the 6+1 traits of writing. V.O.I.C.E.S as it is acronym lends it self as an additional guide of teaching, modelling and assessing students journey through the writing process. The 6+1 traits to writing also acts as an instrument for each stage of the writing process to aid students in formulating ideas, organization of those ideas, selection of appropriate words and context to wr...

The Writing Process and 6+1 Traits

Image
During our previous class, we explored "The Writing Process" as well as "The 6+1 Traits of Writing".          Writing is, for me, this ever-changing, non-linear journey along which I discover a unique way to put thoughts into words.  The entire process can be broken down into five stages, such as prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. Because the process is inherently recursive, I find it especially freeing. At any point, one can go back and review their methods to make them better.        The 6+1 Traits of Writing is more than a method of education; it highlights the complex landscape of writing, in my opinion. A thorough framework for navigating all aspects of the writing process, it addresses the essential elements of ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, conventions, and presentation. I think it's really helpful to be able to concentrate on just one or two elemen...
